Course info
Careers in research and development within agrochemical, agricultural and specialist biotechnology industries, the environmental and amenity service industries and also a wide range of other opportunities including retail management and public services will be open to you. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) offer new hope to countries that traditionally do not possess favourable growing climates, but they also raise serious ethical questions about the nature of such foods and their long-term effects. This course places emphasis upon the responses of plants to climate change - particularly high carbon dioxide levels - and conditions such as water and salt stress. You will also see how the new technologies of plant cell culture and genetic engineering, alongside conventional plant breeding, are leading to improvements in yield, food quality and tolerance to a wide range of environmental stresses. Civil Engineering professionals are employed as contractors and consultant engineers in mainstream organisations such as local authorities, government and public bodies with other sectors demanding the broadly-based education this course can offer. Covering large-scale construction projects such as pipelines, bridges, roads and airports, the course will help you to develop the technical, communication and management skills required to devise, implement and contribute to multi-million pound projects, either in the UK or overseas. Recent well-known civil engineering achievements include the Channel Tunnel, the Second Severn Crossing and Hong Kong Airport. This course is also available as a Sandwich course of 4 years and a part-time course of 5-6 years.
